The unique 2018 Kia Soul is spacious, fun to drive, and has plenty of packages that allow for precise customization

The Kia Soul is one of the quirkier vehicles in the family, but right out of the gate it amassed a cult following. It's a vehicle that doesn't fit into a neat little box- even though it's shaped like one! It's got the boxy nature of an SUV, the low-riding vibe of a sedan, the usefulness of a hatchback, and not-too-big-not-too-small qualities of a compact crossover.

For all the those reasons, it's one of the most popular models here at our Novi, Michigan dealership. Today we'll take an in-depth look at the Kia Soul. We'll check out the standard features, available packages, and what you can expect to find on each trim. By the time you're done with this page, you'll have a better sense of which trim (or trims) you like and want to come in and test drive. Ready? Let's go!

The 2018 Kia Soul has three trims to choose from:

  • Soul
  • + (plus)
  • ! (exclaim)

The base trim has a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine under the hood that delivers 130 horsepower. Those who prefer to drive stick will be pleased to know it comes as a 6-speed manual, but automatic drivers can still get a 6-speed automatic version. The Soul + offers a little more power with a 2.0L engine that has 161 horsepower and comes with the same 6-speed automatic transmission (no manual, though.) Drivers who really need a bit of thrill behind the wheel will want to go with the top trim level. The Soul ! comes in hot with a 1.6L Turbocharged engine with 201 horsepower and a 7-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission. Due to the vehicle's eccentric but unassuming looks, with the Soul ! you can really have fun around Detroit speeding by sporty looking sedans and leaving them in the dust.

Aside from the turbocharged engine, all Soul models have another trick up their sleeves: a shockingly spacious interior, which suburban Farmington Hills shoppers appreciate. With the back seats folded flat there's 61.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo space and 24.2 cubic feet behind the second row. There's more, though! The Soul also has a concealed storage space out back that's perfect for smaller items like emergency clothes, a First Aid kit, or hiding valuables like a laptop or camera while you run errands.  Once you use the storage compartments, the cargo volume shifts to 49.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo space and 18.8 cubic feet out back.

It's clear the Kia Soul can haul cargo, and current drivers rave about the passenger space, but how does it check out on the technology front?

All trims come standard with Bluetooth for calls and music, USB plugs, controls mounted on the steering wheel, and two 12-volt plugs. As you move up to the second trim, the Soul + provides drivers with the UVO eServices infotainment system on a 7-inch screen. There's also Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ for slick and familiar smartphone integrations. Driving is also made easier thanks to a rearview camera, keyless entry, and there's a Drive Mode select system where you can choose from Normal, Eco, or Sport to better cater to how you want to drive that day.  The Soul ! has the Supervision Meter Cluster that takes the graphics up a sharp notch and provides useful vehicle information. There's also a push button start so you don't need to search for your keys; let them sit at the bottom of the bag! Design wise, this trim has cloth seats with leather trim and orange contrast stitching that pops.

What makes the Soul such a fun car to shop for is that each trim has a great selection of packages you can add on to enhance technology (and design) and really give you, the shopper, the chance to choose exactly what you want and leave the rest.

On the base trim you can add the UVO eServices infotainment system, auto on/off headlights, and automatic climate control.

Top add-ons with the Soul + include a wheel package, a two-tone paint jobs to help you standout even more, a Harman Kardon premium 8-speaker system, and navigation so you won't get lost crusing around Southfield. You can also get a panoramic sunroof, leather seat trim, and the following advanced safety features which make for confident driving around Livonia.

Advanced safety technologies include:

  • Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision Warning System
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking Smart Cruise Control

As you can see, the Soul + has a lot of flexibility

Notable packages on the Soul ! are focused around technology and include LED lights, 10- and 8-way power adjusting seats for driver and passenger, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic, and 2 fast-charge USB ports so you'll always have a fresh battery.
