History of Community Living Centers, Inc.

In 1968, Mary Isabelle Wagner founded Community Living Centers, Inc. As a special education teacher and mother to a developmentally disabled son, she felt compelled to serve her community at large. She also participated in the de-institutionalization movement aimed at returning people with developmental disabilities back to their communities and homes. Starting with only six clients, Community Living Centers, Inc. now serves around 125 individuals. In addition to receiving national recognition, Wagner helped establish the National Association of Private Residential Facilities, which continues to this day. In the 1980s, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit continued to grow so quickly it developed a waitlist. At present, Community Living Centers Inc. owns and runs 11 group homes, providing 24/7 residential support. In addition to residential programs, Community Living Centers, Inc. also operates an assisted independent living program and a respite care program.
