Spotlight: Friends of the Rogue
The vast majority of our planet and the beings that inhabit it are made up of water and rely on it to survive and thrive. The Rogue River is one of the many essential water systems in the world and many different species in the southeast region of Michigan.
With so much riding on this one small water system, it’s imperative to restore it to its natural, healthy state to ensure longevity in the ecosystems that surround it. That’s exactly what Friends of the Rogue aims to do with their multi-faceted clean-up plan.
Friends of the Rogue: Where It All Began
For more than 30 years, Friends of the Rogue has worked diligently to clean up and restore the Rogue River. With the help of thousands and volunteers, donors, and sponsors, with nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization embarks on regular clean-up missions that involve picking up trash, removing invasive species, planting native flora, and more. The hands-on part of this program is just half of what they do. This organization believes that education is just as important when it comes to improving and maintaining our natural surroundings. That’s why they offer an array of educational programs for people of all ages.
The Many Different Facets of Their Work
As we already mentioned, this organization is big on getting out in the trenches and doing the work. Their clean-up missions have made a huge impact on the health of the river itself and the watershed which it contributes to.To safeguard their extensive cleanup efforts, Friends of the Rogue has also created a river monitoring program. The river monitoring program is essentially in place to ensure that generations on down the line will get to enjoy this beautiful natural space. It’s also a great way to engage the surrounding community to spread awareness of the importance of watershed preservation.
